A Social Innovation or a Product of Its Time? The Rehn-Meidner Modelâs Relation to Contemporary Economics and the Stockholm School
A wage and economic policy programme for full employment, price stability, growth and equity was developed by two Swedish trade-union economists in the early post-war period. A restrictive macroeconomic policy, a wages policy of solidarity and an active labour market policy are the cornerstones of the Rehn-Meidner model. The model was influenced by Hans Singerâs analysis of the fallacies of incomes policy under full employment conditions. However it is difficult to find equivalences in contemporary economics to the modelâs composition of means and goals, functional relationships or to its emphasis on the role of actual profits in wage formation.Rehn-Meidner model; Swedish model; Stockholm school of economics; labour market policy; wages policy of solidarity
Socialt kapital och karteller
This study discusses social capital and related concepts that can be useful when analysing cartels. Different types of definitions of social capital are discussed. It is concluded that organisations can generate social capital which results in increased ability to cooperate in efficient ways. Organised social capital can lead to confidence, facilitating cooperation when trust is not enough. The empirical case discussed in the paper is cartel formation in Swedish brewing industry. This study confirms many results indicated in different case studies: the importance of organisation, leadership, control apparatus, industry specific circumstances, and that cartel success often is preceded by failures. The brewing case is used in the theoretical discussion of social capital. The societal context of this study is the stricter cartel policy since the 1990s. A hypothetical construction of four phases for 1870-2009 is made, based on institutional environment and possibilities for cartels to cooperate efficiently.Social capital; Cartels; Swedish brewing industry; Cartel policy; Institutional environment
Vetenskaplig expertis och nordomrÄdets naturresurser
The essay reflects on political pressures exerted by and on scientists and technologists acting as advisors on political and economic matters of the high north. It uses two case studies to do this. One consists in the group of scientists from several nations who engaged as advisors to their foreign offices in the process leading up tothe ratification of the Spitsbergen/Svalbard treaty in 1920. The focus is on the discourse regarding hunting, mining and nature protections on these islands. The second case is the way technologists and geological scientists were engaged in the industrialisation of the USSR. These contexts of course differ in scale and in many other ways but are similar in certain respects. The discussion is centred on the problems of technocracy which is commented based on the Frankfurt school's elaborations on the open society and differing interpretations of technological determinism. This is related further to contemporary contentions over the balance between scientific based environmental stewardship and technological management in northern raw material extraction
Forests certification, effect on companies and forest owner associations
The Swedish Forest have recently become more oriented towards more sustainable forestry through a series of legal changes that puts demands on forest owners. With the forest certification organizations FSC and PEFC the forest owners can certify their forests to show that they have a higher standard regarding sustainability and the environment than the law requires.
The purpose of the study is to investigate how large forestry actors justify the profitability of forest certification. To achieve the purpose of this study has been conducted through qualitative interviews with respondents from some of Sweden's largest forestry companies and organizations. The interviews included the respondentâs views on forest certification, what obstacles and advantages arise from being certified. The study has also included how major actors view the future of forest certification.
The results of the study have shown that forest certification both has advantages and disadvantages. Forest certification can help a company strengthen its brand and reputation. It also helps the companies to have well-managed forests and a receipt that the forest is managed in a good way. The obstacles that were mentioned were linked to the administrative work of the certification, which is time- and resource-consuming. A lot is happening in the forest sector, and there are demands from both the EU and nationally. It has also been mentioned that there is a risk that our Swedish certification systems may become irrelevant if higher requirements from the EU are implemented in Sweden
Social sustainability in urban planning processes : a case study of Mary Anderssonâs park, Malmö
The concept of sustainable development, as well as the social dimension of
sustainability, are complex concepts without a clear definition and characterized
by conflict in terms of interest, goals and value. Beyond the debate on meaning,
social sustainability is today a central concept in politics and has an important
function in discussions about goals and aims regarding planning and social
development.
The purpose of this study was to understand how different actors work with and
relate to social sustainability in the planning of public spaces, through literature
studies and an example study of the planning process of Mary Anderssonâs park
in Sorgenfri, Malmö. The example study consisted of three semi-structured
interviews and document studies.
Based on the literature study, social sustainability was divided into two main
categories for a theoretical understanding of what can be seen as social
sustainability in physical planning: social justice and sustainability of community.
Mary Anderssonâs park can be seen as a successful project that in several ways
relates to social sustainable development of public spaces. Lessons from the
project included, among other things, that extensive dialogue and planning
processes require long-term perspectives, resources, driving actors and crossborder cooperation. Dialogue and co-creation generated and maintained
involvement, something that contributes to that places can be seen as social
sustainable over time. As well as taking advantage of the residents' ideas and the
local history of the place generated a local pride and anchored the place in the
area. The lessons can be summed up in a lack of comprehensive directives that
facilitate this type of cross-border planning processes and that social gains are not
always measurable
Eli Heckscherâs Ideological Migration Toward Market Liberalism
For most of his life economist and economic historian Eli Heckscher was the most firmly principled economic liberal Sweden had. He fought against state-socialist tendencies, Keynesian crisis policy, and economic planning. In his younger days, however, he was a social conservative who adopted an almost state-socialist stance. This article provides an account of Heckscherâs ideology and its development, drawing on previously untranslated policy-oriented discourse and focusing on Heckscherâs movement toward market liberalism. It details Heckscherâs liberal insights in political economy and his fears of a government with unprecedented resources, the creation of a âFrankensteinâs monster.
Creative destruction; Malinvestment; Schumpeter; Innovation
Is Swedish Research in Economic History Internationally Integrated?
This paper presents empirical evidence of the international integration of Swedish economic historians. Contrary to the claims of a recent national evaluation of the discipline, the Swedish shares of international publications and conference presentations are robustly below available cross-country and cross-discipline benchmarks. Also considering levels of research inputs, the relative underperformance of the Swedish field is alarming. Four main explanations to this situation are forwarded: 1) Being among the largest economic history communities in the world, Sweden has become self-sufficient and almost independent of the international arena. 2) The dominating research language is Swedish. 3) The dominating publication format is monographs (in Swedish). 4) Swedish economic historians are reluctant to use modern economic theories and statistical analysis to complement the traditionally dominant qualitative research methods.Economic history; Historical economics; Methodology; Bibliometrics; Research Policy; Bibliography
It is important to find recovery in everyday life to avoid mental fatigue, not least for those who are exposed to a lot of stress or mental exhaustion in their daily life (Johansson 2020). By using research in environmental psychology, it is possible to create environments that offer high potential for mental recovery. Being out in nature and walking, hanging out with people you like, engaging in gardening or other physical activities are some of the things that can make people find recovery (Kaplan et al. 1998).
The purpose of this thesis is to create an increased understanding of how well-designed park environments can contribute to improved mental health and well-being both in the city and in the countryside.
Resta gÄrd is a visitor farm outside Uppsala that has progressed and developed a lot in recent years, mostly in terms of a higher activity in general, as well as an increased number of visitors. Such circumstances have led to an increased demand and need for a park within the courtyard center. By creating a restorative environment that takes into account the historical structure, it is possible to create a park that is well adapted to the site and most importantly, contributes to mental recovery.
This thesis includes a literature study on environmental psychology, plant design and permaculture. In addition to this, a site study has also been carried out. The site study includes walks with residents, employees and landscape architects, as well as an inventory and analysis of the site today and finally, an investigation of the history of Resta gÄrd.
By taking ledge in the principles in environmental psychology, a program for the park area could be produced. The principles were applied in order to ensure that all aspects were fulfilled to reach a restorative environment and in practice, a park that offers mental recovery.
The whole process has been iterative to enable the best results. This process has finally led to a design proposal for Resta gÄrd's park area.
The result of the process is a park that has good conditions to offer mental recovery. In the park there are five different rooms that all have unique purposes and offer different activities. In the kitchen garden, it is possible to see how the food we eat emerge from the soil, follow the cycle and visitors can gain an understanding of where the food comes from. On the social surface, people can meet and engage in various activities. The herb garden signals calm and offers edible vegetation with different structures and characters, which means that humans can experience nature with all their senses. The arboretum offers the possibility for visitors to carry out physical activity, which is important in order to prevent high stress levels in the body. The last room has the fire in focus. The place offers different types of seating; seating in the center near the fire, completely separate seats and seats in between. This selection of seats has been created with the hope that everyone will find a place that suits them and their current mood.
In the discussion section, the problem of how the place is dependent on care is raised so that the right characters can be maintained. If the care is neglected, the park will be experienced differently and not give the desired effect on humans
